Superconductors: The Lucerne Festival
① An event tomorrow at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland will celebrate this year's theme, "PrimaDonna", and will feature only female conductors—a riposte to backward opinions still held by some in the industry.
② Earlier this year Russian conductor Yuri Temirkanov likened his distaste for female conductors to his distaste for fish.
③ The Lucerne Festival has never shied away from politics: its origin was a concert held in 1938 by Italian virtuoso Arturo Toscanini, who refused to conduct in territory controlled by fascist Italy or Nazi Germany.
④ Now the festival attracts the most renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic—who next month will perform under the baton of a woman, Emmanuelle Ha?m, for only the fourth time in 175 years.
⑤ Two days later the 16 women of the Berlin Philharmonic, which only allowed women members from 1982, will be led by Cordelia H?fer in performing works of three 19th-century female composers.
⑥ This is how women should conduct themselves.
